A warm welcome to the RMS Modern Foreign Languages Department webpage. At RMS we understand the importance of communication in an increasingly globalised world and all girls study at least one modern foreign language to GCSE level.
In Year 7 all girls study French or Spanish as their core language in addition to Latin. They have a few introductory lessons to give them the opportunity to experience both languages and so to make a more informed decision about which one to choose as their core language.
Year 8 girls can add German or Mandarin or if they chose French as their core language in Year 7, they can also opt for Spanish as their second language.
For GCSE, all girls take at least one MFL, with a group of keen and able linguists taking two and consistently achieving high marks.
Clinics for core languages at GCSE level are organised on a weekly basis and all girls receive extra support from a native speaker language assistant.
In Y12-13 girls can continue with any of the languages taught lower down the school. Support from a native speaker assistant is provided on a one to one basis in a weekly slot to ensure that students become fluent in the target language within their A level year.
Italian is available in the Sixth Form as a GCSE course and complements the profile of girls who are keen linguists, helping them to broaden their language skills.
Trips
Trips are regularly organised to allow the girls to practise their language skills and put their learning into an authentic context. Trips are run by teachers during holidays to avoid taking up valuable teaching time and are designed to cater for the specific learning requirements of a particular year group. We run the following trips within the Senior School and Sixth Form:
a residential trip to France for Y9
a residential trip to Valencia for Y9
a residential trip to Cologne for Y10
a residential trip to Beijing for Y10
a cultural study trip to Rome for Y12, in liaison with the Art Department
a cultural study trip to Paris for Y12
a cultural trip to Salamanca for Year 12 is run depending on numbers
