The Medical Centre is a well equipped ten bedded unit, staffed by four qualified nurses holding current first aid certificates. Two nurses are on duty from 7.30am until 5.30pm and on call at all other times during the term. A walk in surgery is held before and after school hours during the week. The duty nurse is available via e mail if parents/guardians wish to correspond with her.
The knowledge and experience of all our nurses is frequently updated and extended within our field of practice. The team provide training and support for all staff and coordinate care plans for pupils with individual medical requirements, such as anaphylaxis, diabetes, asthma or epilepsy.
The nurses are primarily available for the boarding pupils, but also available for the day pupils, members of staff and visitors experiencing minor illnesses, accidents and emergencies.
All boarding pupils are registered with our local lady GP who holds an internal surgery once a week and is available for appointments externally.
Our NHS dentist holds a clinic for checkups in the medical centre dental surgery once a week and, if treatment is required, the pupils are escorted to the local practice .This service is available for boarding pupils who request to be registered.
All pupils have access to the school counsellor who is based in the medical centre. Appointments can be arranged by the pupil or by a member of staff.
Both boarding and day pupils are given the option to register with an external optician who holds a clinic in the medical centre once a week.

I have been in nursing since 1980, following my training my specialist areas were in Ear, Nose and Throat surgery and then Burns and Plastic surgery. During my time as a nurse I have benefitted from attending many courses and seminars on different aspects of nursing relevant to my role. These have included basic counselling and grievance counselling, self harm and eating disorders. Whilst working at the Royal Masonic School for 15 years I have undertaken many different responsibilities alongside bringing up my four children. I took on the role of senior nurse in 2008.
The varied courses I have attended allow me to constantly revise and improve my knowledge and this also enables me to pass on critical information to other staff members.
Part of my role as Senior Nurse, along with the nursing team, has been to update and modernise the running of the medical centre. This has included making significant changes to the administrative areas which fall under our responsibility, in particular addressing the legal aspects of drugs storage and administration and the production of other relevant policies within the school environment.
Most recently I have undertaken a training scheme with other members of the team, funded by The Anaphylaxis Campaign. The purpose of which is to allow me to educate both the staff and pupils on Anaphylaxis and the use and administration of Epi-Pens. I am also responsible for the update of the care plans and emergency medication for pupils with allergies.
